We're again in a cool/dry season and so, it is the return of… static cling. I guess no one is a stranger to this phenomenon, especially in clothing. And you'll agree with me that sometimes it can be very, very annoying. In this post, I'm going to give you a few tips to get rid of it. Here we go!
But first, what is static cling?
Static cling is the tendency of light objects to stick to other objects because of static electricity. It is common in clothing, but occurs with other items, such as the tendency of dust to be attracted to and stick to plastic items. The separate positive and negatively charged surfaces attract each other (Wikipedia). Static is especially noticeable when humidity is low, allowing static electricity to build up.
5 tips to get rid of static cling on clothes :
Moisturize your skin to keep clothes from sticking: Any kind of moisturizing lotion will work to remove static cling. Before putting your clothes on, rub moisturizer onto your legs, torso, and arms. Moisturizer will dispel static as your clothes absorb it from your skin. +You can add glycerin to your body lotion or apply a small quantity directly on your skin.
Mist your dried clothes lightly with water: Fill an empty spray bottle with lukewarm tap water. Stand a bit away from your clothes and spray 4-5 times on it. The water will neutralize the static charges that cause cling to occur. You better do this right before you put your clothing item on for the best results. [Avoid spraying too much.. I guess you don't want to go out with damp clothes, isn't it?]
Hide a safety pin inside of your clothes to absorb static: Take a metal safety pin and turn your clothing inside out. Unlock the pin and slide it through the seam of your clothing so that it’s hidden from the outside. Turn your clothing out to face the right direction and put your clothing on. The safety pin will absorb any static electricity.
For those who use a dryer machine, you better air dry your clothes to avoid static altogether: Instead of running your clothes through the machine, dry them by hanging them on a clothesline or closet rod. If you cannot apply this method, you can still add a dryer ball to your dryer before adding your wet clothes. It will almost do the same work.
Try privileging cotton fabric clothes: As a natural fiber, cotton absorbs some moisture from the air and from your body. This makes it slightly conductive, which drains static charge as it forms.
