Ice cube on a string.

Updated: Jul 17, 2022

Hi and welcome to the (2nd) second episode of Mouniirah's Experiments. Do you think it's possible to catch an ice cube with a string? That's what we're going to figure out today. Thank you for joining me. Let's go!

What you'll need:

  1. A string,

  2. A glass/bowl of water,

  3. Salt,

  4. Ice cubes.

Instructions:

  1. Put the ice in the glass or bowl of water: The cube will bob up and down in the water and then float on the top,

  2. Place one end of the string from the fishing pole on top of the ice cube,

  3. Sprinkle salt on the ice where the string is touching,

  4. Wait about 10 seconds, then carefully lift the string out of the water by its two extremities: It will take with it the ice cube!

How it works:

Salt lowers the solidification temperature of water (which is why roads are salted in winter). Here, the salt causes a bit of ice to melt at the top of the cube. The dry string quickly absorbs the salty water, allowing the water at the top of the ice cube to solidify again. The string is then trapped under a thin layer of ice.

See:

+ Tips: You can use cold water so that your ice cube does not melt quickly in the water.

Feel free to try it too and tell me in the comments whether you succeed or not? But I already know you will. Thank you for reading. May God bless you, take care.
