Ice on fire.

Updated: Jul 17, 2022

Hi and welcome to the third (3rd) episode of Mouniirah's experiments! When I tell you (ice and.. fire), I think the first thing that comes to mind is the melting phenomenon, right? But I recently heard about a burning ice experiment. Sounds impossible? Yeah! I was skeptical too, so I decided to give it a try. Stay with me until the end for the result. We're going to figure it out.

⚠️ Caution: Since this experiment involves fire, please be careful while doing it.

  • What you'll need:

    1. Ice cubes,

    2. Hand sanitizer,

    3. A lighter,

    4. A pyrex plate.

  • Instructions:

    1. Place the ice cubes in the Pyrex plate

    2. Pour a little hand-sanitizer on the top of the ice cubes

    3. Set the fire on!

  • How it works:

In this experiment, the ice appears to burn because a solution of alcohol (here contained in the hand sanitizer) is poured over the ice before we set it on fire. So, you’re not actually burning ice, but rather the alcohol on the top and surrounding the ice.

Combustion reaction of ethanol:

C2H5OH (l) + 3 O2 (g) → 2 CO2 (g) + 3 H2O (g)

Finally, it appears that it's scientifically impossible to burn ice, because ice is water and pure water is not flammable. But there are experiments (with alcohol or calcium carbide) which can create the illusion of burning ice. And they are quite interesting to test. See here, for a better result. Thank you for watching, I hope you enjoyed it. May God bless you, take care.

Before congratulating you, do you think that the power of the fire would have been more important if you had used a solution with a higher concentration of alcohol ? Thanks for the experience ✨.

Hello Jefferson! And thanks for your question 😊 I've tried it two times and I realized that the more the volume of alcohol, the stronger the fire. So yes! Volume and concentration of alcohol also influence the result.
